Gray Malin print is hard to miss. The vibrant colors and epic scale of Gray’s photography are simply mesmerizing. They transport you to a dreamland – except that he shoots all real locations! Gray’s colorful take on the world – and the interior design he’s inspired – have given him global appeal, starting right here in his adopted hometown of L.A.

With landscapes ranging from iconic Mediterranean beaches to the snowy slopes of Aspen, Malin is a very busy man. We were naturally curious how someone with such a splashy outlook on life – and a demanding travel schedule – mellows out at the end of the day. Gray was kind enough to answer a few questions about his bedtime routine…

As a fine art photographer, you are visually stimulated by beautiful landscapes and vivid colors every day. What do you do at night to clear your mind and decompress before bed?

I love to watch the sunset and throw the ball with my dog, Stella, in the front yard – usually with a glass of Pinot Noir.

Orange Crush

If we were to photograph your bedroom from an aerial view (a la Gray Malin style), what would be the one stand-out item?

Probably the framed print of Orange Crush from my series, “Poolside.” The colors really pop!

The contents of a bedside table can reveal a lot about a person – what items do you have on yours?

A candle from Colette in Paris, the coffee table book “Pools” and my trustworthy white-noise sleep machine.

Bedroom artwork: Bold and bright or cool and calming?

I have a lot of cool colors from the paint and fabric in the room so I incorporated pops of warm colors, too…so I guess the answer is both!

  • Image of people synchronized swimming.
  • Photograph of two penguins.
  • Photograph of orange and blue innertubes in a pool.
  • Image of people laying out on the beach
  • Image of umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach

What is your favorite midnight snack?

Nope.

Because you frequently travel to new destinations, how do you acclimate to sleeping in unfamiliar places? What do you do when you can’t sleep?

It’s true traveling can mess up your sleep, but when I’m traveling for work, the days are always non-stop. Luckily, I’m usually so exhausted by the time I get to bed that I fall right to sleep.

You’ve traveled to some far flung locales and stayed in some pretty dreamy hotels (Le Méridien Hotels come to mind). What hotel has the best morning views and breakfast in bed in the world?

I recently stayed at the Caesar Park Hotel on Ipanema beach in Rio de Janiero, and it had sweeping views of the ocean that took my breath away. They just redesigned the ocean front suites, and the results are simply divine. I couldn’t wait to pull back the curtains and look out over the coveted beach and sea.

What is your morning routine when at home here in Los Angeles? Have you discovered a secret to starting the day right?

It’s not always the easiest start, but I find an early morning workout really makes the best way to get the day going when I’m home.

People in the ocean.

Here at Parachute, we make bedding in earthy, neutral tones, inspired by the natural beauty of our Venice Beach surroundings. That said…what do you think our next bedding color should be!?

Coral! It’s a personal favorite and looks amazing with neutrals.

Your collection, Up & Away, is an homage to Paris. What’s the dreamiest part of Paris from your eyes (and lens)?

For me, Paris is all about culture. I studied French from an early age and feel very comfortable roaming the city without worrying I may get lost. Perhaps in another lifetime I could be Parisian, but for now, I love to visit and create work around this enchanting city.
